Last night was the most bar hopping night I’ve done in years. I forgot how OU weekend impacts clubs down here. I guess the goal was to find a place with decent music and crowd but maybe that was too much to ask. Everywhere we went it was one or the other or none of the above. Got downtown a little bit before midnight which is kinda late for me but oh well. Maybe I unconsciously knew that it was going to be one of those nights. So I guess 2 hours was plenty of time to have a good time. Plus it was my 4th night out this week so I didn’t expect much. Here’s how it went down.

Anyway, I got to The Marq for a quick drink. I coulda stayed there longer but watching music videos on a tv is not really my thing. I thought how about something different so we ventured to Malverde to check DJ Mel. On our way there, we saw literally 12 dudes walk into Suite 101 so that was outta the question. A couple of blocks further, Hudson seemed to have a nice crowd. We went in. Walked around the bar and came right back out. Nice crowd but music was not. Townhouse actually took 30 seconds. Now to Malverde.

I rarely go to that side of town because it is quite a walk. As I walked up the stairs, I heard some good music so I was expecting somewhat of a crowd dancing. WRONG! People were sitting. Not even standing to show some appreciation for the nice tracks Mel was dropping. Dancefloor empty. A couple standing by the bar. Another group of girls standing a few feet away. A buncha people on the patio. Everybody else was sitting on their asses talking about god knows what. Maybe the trek to Malverde made them tired. Maybe the couches had Temper-Pedic cushions so they were so comfortable that they didn’t want to get up. Maybe they were trying to find the cure for cancer. I don’t know. Meanwhile, there goes another funk joint. I always believed that there are genres of music you listen to and others that you can’t help but move to. And Funk surely falls in the latter category. Big up to Mel for the nice selection. Anyway, to quote Jay-Z, On To The Next One.

Next stop: Barcelona after riding on the back to those golf carts. Gotta show some love to DJ Digg. Crowd was ok. A lotta standing around the dancefloor while some people were actually really enjoying themselves. But I was still in the mood to do something different. By this time it was already 1:15am. Hop on the same golf cart and head to West 6th to see what the hype was all about.

Next stop: Dogwood. I’ve only been there once. A lotta people there. People playing that game with the ring and the hook on the wall. And over there DJ Abe The Assassin, dancing to country music. Funny, I gotta admit. A whole lotta standing around looking pretty going on. L-shape stance (check out the 5 types of clubs for reference) everywhere. It hit a nerve and my brain said umm let’s see what else is up.

Last stop: Union Park. Not much going on in the main room. All the action was in the Boom Boom Room with DJ Mighty Mike. People were moving. A bachelorette party over there. People dancing on the couches. And that’s when Mighty Mike dropped a Michael Jackson track for me and it just made my night. I actually stopped caring after that. I was good.

That’s 7 spots in 2 hours, from the Warehouse District, to 6th Street, to West 6th. A record for me. My rule of thumb is that if I have to go to more than 3 places to have a good time, chances are it’s not gonna as much fun as I expected. Time waits for nobody and running around town from bar to bar is a waste of time and next thing you know lights come on, time to go. I was never a fan of bar hopping. Every once in a while it happens. But I do enjoy running into people while I’m traversing downtown and supporting people who work there. Big up to everybody I ran into last night, however quick it was. What about you? How do you like bar hopping?
